Feeding of the Hungry Ghosts Retreat, October 27-30
At the heart of this retreat is transferring the merit of our Dharma practice for the benefit of all those who have died, particularly those in the last year, and especially for those who have died in tragic and distressing circumstances and find themselves in unfortunate states of existence. Retreat Dharma talks and discussions will focus primarily on the conversion of “hungry ghost” states of suffering, which are the result of clinging to the delusion that one lacks Buddha Nature and therefore cannot take in the Buddha’s liberating teaching. During this retreat, we will celebrate the Feeding of the Hungry Ghosts (Segaki) ceremony, Segaki Toro and our Founder’s Day ceremony. Spiritual counseling will be offered to both in person and online participants.
New Year Celebratory Retreat, December 29-January 1
Year-end is traditionally a time for both reflection and celebration. This three-day retreat offers the opportunity to do this together as members of the Buddha’s family. Dharma talks explore ways to deepen our resolve and our practice in the coming year. We bid farewell to the old and welcome the new with meditation, ceremonies and social celebration. New Year’s Eve celebrations will include a New Year’s Eve meditation vigil and our New Year Ceremony, followed by welcoming in the New Year with the ringing of the monastery’s great bell at midnight. Anyone who has attended an Introductory Retreat at Shasta Abbey or one of the other temples of the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives (OBC) or is otherwise familiar with Soto Zen Buddhist practice is welcome to apply.
